Agave mitis

Belonging to an endemic family of America, which are the BROMELIACEAE, growing  mostly in the tropics, on the tree as the epiphyte plant  (Tillandsia sp) or as pineapple and as numerous plant on earth.

The Ochagavia carnea is endemic to center of Chile between 1640 and 6560 feet of altitude (500 and 2000m), where the lake of water can be felt in several months, before the arrival of the rainfall in winter between 1.30 and 2.60 feet  (400 and 800 mm). He grows on the steep slopes oriented south in the Rocky outcrop, sheltered under a light canopy.

In the garden in winter no rigorous (19.4 Fahrenheit) he is easy to cultivate but the more complicated rest be patient, and expect the any sign of a potential flowering , despite it may support the lack of water, he is preferable to water properly on the  heat wave in summer.

This sumptuous flowering of a bright pink, accompanied by terminal leaves of a similar color, she is composite of a numerous flower of a purplish blue in tubular form.

Cheirolophus canariensis subsp. subexpinnata

Lysimachia minoricensis

Conclusion,

Why has it disappeared

Lysimachia minoricensis introduction,

Here we have a plant at least surprising who would have could know a sad end to the twentieth century, because the civil war in Spain.

Eh, yes this plant totally faded away of his wild environment since of a half century, the last plant remained only in the botanical garden of Barcelona before the civil war.

A few years after the war, the famous plant will be found in bushes near of the garden, which will allow  the safeguard of the plant.

Lysimachia minoricensis in my garden

Geographical distribution,

Lysimachia minoricensis  was only known in a small locality whose name is Barranc de Sa Vall South of Menorca, in the Balearic archipelago in Spain, where it has disappeared between 1926 to 1950.

Balearic archipelago in Spain

The small story,

It has been mentioned as very rare by the first botanist Rodriquez having discovered in 1878, thereafter of other botanist will arrive on the island between 1886 to 1921, for discovering this madness botanical, native of the island where it will be victims of its success thereafter.

Michel Paccard, (Botanist, doctor and mountaineer)

Why has it disappeared,

The 3 assumption :

-One of the first causes of the decline of the species, would be wild collection, for the
scientific collected  in the world, who have certainly accelerated the decline of this endemic lineage.

-Another theory would be a forest fire who would have that occurred between 1926 to 1950 which would have destroyed all vegetation of the valley, where the alone population to grow.

-A third assumption presumes that the agriculture and livestock by the human, since ancient times have favored the survival of Lysimachia minoricensis, that kept clean vegetation of his environment, but it seems that it does not tolerate the competition of the other plants nearby.

The progressive abandonment of  fields before advancing on the city of the archipelago, has increased the spread of weeds making the competition harder, for our small plants.

In the botanical garden the culture, it needs open space, and light to prosper quietly. The first botanist who discovered the described him as a plant in shady and cool environments.

The cattle do not affect because the unpleasant odor of the leaves protects the well being eaten, the smell seems to be a positive factor.
There are about 5000 years old goat of the Balearic Islands cave named scientifically Myotragus balearicus, this extinct in a few years, largely because of the hunting excessive, it was indirectly responsible habitat.

Reconstitution of the Myotragus balearicus to Barcelona

Attempt to reintroduce,

This species is listed in Annex I of the Bern Convention, which lists in a book endangered species.

Several attempts to reintroduce have been made in its habitat, which is designated as a site of special natural interest by the law of 01/1991, the Parliament of the Balearic Islands. It is also included in the European Natura 2000 network.

The various attempts to introduce the species in its natural habitat have been undertaken since 1959 but have failed thereafter.

Secondly, reintroduction efforts should continue, given that its habitat has not still disappeared, it remains still possible with the persevering, several management plans must be in place for the areas where the species was reintroduced to that the population become independent.

Lysimachia minoricensis

Conclusion,

The islands are extremely fragile ecosystems or the number of endemic plants is remarkably high.

More than 30 species have disappeared over the Mediterranean in the last two centuries, largely because of humans.

Despite all this, the risk of extinction of plant and animal island species are generally higher than for plant of continental areas, mainly caused by a small number of individuals and their genetic characteristics.
